Bible 101 was conceived about five years ago when several of the elect from the RCIA decided they would like to learn more about the Bible than we had time for during regular sessions.
It is basically a “How to Read the Bible” series. We end each year with a list of topics that we present to each other and choose which of these we will be perusing the following year. Our choice of discussion subjects allows us to read in both Jewish and Christian Scriptures. We also choose both broad and narrow topics so we may read most of a gospel or just one parable for the day’s session.
I believe that understanding: the literary forms used by the various authors in the Bible, the history, and preconceptions about the reality of their times, and the development of the authors’ understanding of God’s revelation; we are more prepared to hear and to listen to what God is saying to us today.
With these understandings firmly in mind we can grasp more readily than God is comforting and afflicting us through Scripture; moving us gently towards conversion, forgiveness, and hopefully, towards the love of God and neighbor.
Our goal is to love God more as we appreciate God’s revelation better and to truly expand our love of neighbor so we are no longer able to distinguish between “us” and “them”.
